Etymology: From the name in Dardic. The name's meaning and origin are unknown. Ancient Greek travelers mentioned a warrior group Δαδικοί (Dadikoí) or Δάρδαι (Dárdai) living in the area, Dadikai appears to be the Persian name derived from the Daradas given in the Puranic sources. Kalhana, in Rajatarangini, mentions the Darads as residing to the north of Kashmir. Also see Daradas and Sanskrit दरद (darada).
